An extra bonus at our planning session on
January 3 was Larry’s show and tell of many of
his violins including two Hardanger fiddles one
from 1898 and one that he made himself. He
played a bit on each to show us the difference in
sound – and concluded that an old one does not
necessarily have a better tone than a new one.
Do not judge all you see, do not believe all you hear, do not do all you can,
do not say all you know, do not eat all you have, let no one know what you
have in your heart or in your wallet.
Described as people who are really skilled at something. Fingertoppskänsla
translates to a “fingertips feeling,” but more broadly, it refers to someone
having the ability to sort of intuiting what needs to be done—making
decisions according to the feeling in his/her fingertips. This could be in
terms of baking, people skills, investing, or really anything.
Swedes in Norwegian Butter Bust
He was a Swedish novelist, playwright, poet, and journalist. His works
often deal with
melancholy and lovelorn characters, and offer a
the rich portrayal of contemporary
Stockholm through the eyes of the ‘flaneur’
(a person who walks the city in order to experience it).
Söderberg is greatly appreciated in his
native country and is sometimes considered to be the equal of August
Strindberg, Sweden’s national author.
“One wants to be loved, in lack thereof admired, in lack thereof feared,
in lack thereof loathed and despised.
One wants to instill some sort of emotion in people.
The soul trembles before emptiness and
desires contact at any
price.” (From Doctor Glas)
Stark, brooding, and enormously controversial when first published in 1905, this astonishing novel juxtaposes impressions of Stockholm at the close of the 19th century against the psychological landscape of a man besieged by obsession. Lonely and introspective, Doctor Glas has long felt an instinctive hostility toward the odious local minister. So when the minister’s beautiful wife complains of her husband’s oppressive sexual attentions, Doctor Glas finds himself contemplating murder. A masterpiece of enduring power, Doctor Glas confronts a chilling moral quandary with gripping intensity.
